Never gets old.
Also: Drop an LS where a 440 was once? Only if you're doing it for the fuel economy.

I wouldn't swap an LS into it.. The 440 is a perfectly fine motor.
I think it is unnecessary to change a classic in decent condition after it has survived so long. Just feels wrong.

James May with a Sten is hilarious, but Clarkson with a Luger is funnier still.

Accidentally un-starred that comment. God damn it, Kinja.
And what if I wanted to mod the engine?

A 440 is one of the best motors to modify. Endless cylinder wall, massive stroke capability, etc.
You can take it to any shop and have it bored to 4.52". More if you can sleeve it. Throw on a high stroker crank and you can make an engine that is > 500 ci and revs to 6500 no problem.
They don't take boost very well, but if you want to get an N/A engine into the 600+ HP range, there's fewer cheaper alternatives than a 440.
With a big budget, you can put a solid cam, fuel injection, great heads, rebuild bottom end, custom headers and intake, and touch the 800+ HP mark.

I think there's nothing more expensive than a cheap Interceptor. That said, the apparent (and probably hidden) rust is completely eclipsed by the awesomeness that is that Webasto sunroof. Nice price, with a healthy dollop of Fuck Yeah.
